The busiest button you own is one you have never looked at

Most local businesses are found on a Google listing, not a website. The customer taps Call, your phone rings, and whether that turns into money depends entirely on whether somebody happens to be free.

It is the highest-intent moment in local search. They have already chosen you. And it lands on the least reliable part of your operation: one phone, one person, opening hours. A listing with hundreds of taps a month and no answer at half of them looks identical, in Google’s data and in yours, to a listing nobody taps.

Two things change that. The number on the profile can point at a line that is always answered, which fixes the outcome without changing anything a customer sees. And the profile’s website and appointment fields can carry a call link, which gives you a route that is free to the caller, works from abroad, and arrives already knowing which listing it came from.

What to do with a listing you already have

The Call button

Point it at a line that answers

A tracked number on the profile, answered by your team when they are free and by the assistant when they are not. The customer experience is unchanged; the outcome is not.

Attribution

You find out what the listing is worth

Calls from the profile become a counted source with an outcome attached. Google tells you the taps; this tells you which taps became bookings.

The link fields

Appointment and website links can be call links

Free to the caller, works from any country, no number disclosed. It is the one place a link genuinely competes with the dial button rather than sitting behind a website.

Multi-location

A listing per branch, a queue per group

Each location keeps its own profile, number and hours, and every call lands in one place where you can see which branches answer and which do not.

Reviews

Asked for at the right moment

A review request goes out after a call that went well, rather than a fortnight later to everyone. Rating is most of what decides whether the listing gets shown at all.

Questions

The ones asked on the profile are the ones asked on the phone

Hours, parking, whether you do a particular thing, whether you take walk-ins. The same knowledge answers them on the call.

After hours

The listing does not close

People search for local businesses in the evening constantly. The Call button is live at nine at night whether or not you are.

Prospecting

Listings that ring out are a lead list

If you sell to local businesses, the ones with a profile and an unanswered phone are a well-qualified target list — and it is public data.

Be straight about what is manual here. Pointing the number and putting a link in the profile fields is something you do in Google’s own dashboard, not something we automate — Google restricted the Business Profile write APIs after the My Business deprecation and several endpoints now need an approved application. Nothing on this page requires that API; it requires ten minutes in your listing.

In practice

What the listing is actually producing

Four hundred taps, no idea what happened

Tracked number · on the profile

Google reports the taps and stops there. Every one becomes a call with a source, an outcome and a recording, so the listing stops being a vanity metric.

The evening searcher

Out of hours · same number

Someone looking for a plumber, a dentist or a takeaway at nine at night. They tap the first listing that answers, and it is a list of three.

“We’re closed now, but I can get you booked for first thing — what’s the problem?”

A customer searching from another country

Call link · in the profile fields

The dial button is useless to them and the listing is often how they find you. A link in the website field is free and works.

Sixty listings and no way to compare them

Roll-up · per location

For a group or a franchise, per-listing answer rates finally make the estate comparable — which is the same argument as the branch league table, arriving through Google.

The objections
Will changing the number on my listing hurt my ranking?

Inconsistent business details across the web can, which is why the thing to change is the number on the profile and everywhere else it is published, not just one. Many businesses instead forward their existing number, which changes nothing publicly at all.

Can the Call button itself be a link rather than a number?

No — that field is a telephone number and Google treats it as one. The link goes in the website and appointment fields, where it is free to the caller and works internationally. The two routes sit side by side.

Do you connect to the Google Business Profile API?

Not today, and we would rather say so than imply it. Everything described here works through your own listing dashboard. If API access matters to you, tell us — it is a build, and the access approval is the long pole, not the code.
